DIY Dog Toy

It’s about time I make something for our furry friend, Tucker 🙂

I found a site on Pinterest that used old dish towels to make a super cute doggy tug toy (http://www.realsimple.com/new-uses-for-old-things/new-uses-family/dish-towel-as-dog-toy-00000000043212/index.html?crlt.pid=camp.vlen3zZofIIl).

There are only a few items needed for this quick and easy project:

  • Three dish towels
  • Scissors

My dog is on the smaller side, so I actually cut two of my dish towels in half and used the three halves. It would depend on the thickness of your dish towels and the size of your dog if you would need to use all three towels.
Next, I cut about a one inch strip from the short side of two of the towels.

Then, I tied the three pieces of towel together at one end using one of the strips I just cut.

Finally, I braided the three pieces together and tied the other end with the remaining strip that I had cut out.

Here is Tucker playing with his new tug toy! He wanted to shake it around, so I couldn’t get a still picture. I guess that means he likes it!

DIY Bronzer

I have pretty fair skin and only tan if I burn first…no thanks, I don’t want skin cancer! I’ve tried several self-tanners, but have never been happy with them. I just hate the way they all smell! I pinned a recipe for a DIY bronzer last summer (http://www.hallmarkchannel.com/home-and-family/how-to/sophie-ulianos-diy-bronzer), but never got around to trying it. It seemed like this was as good a time as any to give it a try.

Before you see how to make it, I’ll give you my thoughts. I really wanted to like this, but it was just ok.  Despite there being more cons than pros, I’d still like to try it again with a little less cocoa powder next time.

Pros:

  • It smells fantastic!
  • Since it uses coconut oil, it’s very moisturizing.
  • No yucky chemicals!

Cons:

  • It takes a long time to rub it in so there aren’t streaks.
  • It rubs off easily onto clothing. Even after an hour it still rubbed off.
  • It washes off with water, so you can’t wear it to the beach, pool, or lake.
  • It seems to settle into the creases of the skin, and it kind of makes you look dirty.

The ingredients needed to make this bronzer include:

  • Coconut oil
  • Cocoa powder
  • 3 black tea bags
  • Vanilla extract
  • Mixing bowl
  • Electric mixer

I started by steeping the three tea bags in 1/2 a cup of boiling water for about 5 minutes, then I let it cool for about 10 minutes.

Next, I added 2 tsp. of coconut oil, 2 tsp. of cocoa powder, 2 tsp. of the cooled black tea, and 1 tsp. of vanilla extract to my mixing bowl.  This doesn’t seem like a lot, but it was enough for my arms and legs…a little goes a long way.

Then, I used my electric mixer, with the whisk attachment, to mix it all together to get a smooth consistency.

Finally, I rubbed it into my skin like you would any lotion. You have to keep rubbing until all the streaks are gone. It smelled so good, I wanted to lick my arm! The picture on the right is my arm with no bronzer and the one on the left is my arm with the bronzer. It definitely gave my skins darker complexion.

White Wine Spritzer with Strawberries

Who couldn’t use a nice, refreshing cocktail at the end of a long week? I recently went to a wine tasting at a local winery in New Hampshire, LaBelle Winery. They had a delicious wine called Seyval Blanc (similar to Pinot Grigio), so I bought a bottle. I found a recipe on Pinterest for a white wine spritzer with strawberries that looked yummy (http://wearychef.com/skinny-white-wine-cocktail/) and thought that would be a great use for my new wine.

The website that posted the recipe said it was low calorie because you only use a splash of wine. There was no way I was only putting a splash of wine in my drink 🙂 I used about half a glass of wine, but you could adjust it to your taste.

The recipe for this drink couldn’t be easier!

  • White wine
  • Lime flavored seltzer
  • Strawberries

First, I sliced the strawberry.
Next, I poured about half a glass of wine.

Then, I filled the rest of the glass with the lime seltzer.

Finally, I added my sliced strawberries on top to garnish. This drink was fantastic! It was so light and refreshing. I bet it would be perfect at a summer BBQ 🙂

Frozen Yogurt Covered Blueberries

Blueberry picking season is almost here! I love picking fresh fruit in the summer, but sometimes you end up with so much fruit you don’t know what to do with it all. I found a great recipe on Pinterest for frozen yogurt covered blueberries (http://www.laaloosh.com/2012/07/11/frozen-yogurt-covered-blueberries/).

It’s so easy, you only need a few items to make them:

  • Blueberries
  • Yogurt (any flavor would work, but I used vanilla)
  • Bowl and spoon
  • Cookie sheet
  • Wax paper

To start, use the spoon to pour some yogurt into the bowl. Then dip the blueberries into the yogurt, making sure to cover them completely.

Arrange the yogurt covered blueberries on the wax paper, on top of the cookie sheet.

Place the cookie sheet into the freezer.

After about 30 minutes the blueberries should be ready to eat! They are absolutely delicious, and a fun snack for kids to help make. My son had a blast making them with me. Put any left over blueberries into a freezer-safe container and return to the freezer (if you have haven’t eaten them all!).
